Coalfish and Pollock

Both species are sometimes confused.  Lateral line is easiest way to distinguish between the two species.

Coalfish

  • Straight lateral line as seen below.  Totally straight with no curve.

Pollock

  •  Curved lateral line as opposed straight on a Coalfish.

Flatfish

Flounders and plaice are often mistakenly identified.  Flounders can have spots which can add to the confusion.    Turbot and Brill also look very similar.  

Dab

  • Curved lateral line as highlighted in photo below.  
  • Skin rough over whole body. 
  • Relatively large eyes
  • Can be see through when held up to light. 

Flounder

  •  Larger tail than plaice
  • No boney ridge on head. 
  • Rough lateral line when running hand up and down. 
  • Can have spots but usually less prominent than plaice.  

Plaice

  •  Relatively small tail. 
  • Skin smooth across whole body. 
  • Series of boney ridges on head.  See photo below. 
  • Usually bright red spots.
